Sauna ventilation: why a sauna cannot work without it

A sauna with no air exchange is not a sauna, just a hot box. Ventilation is what cheap builds most often forget, and it is the first thing you should ask about.

Sauna ventilation: why a sauna cannot work without it

How it should work

Fresh air enters low down near the stove, warms up immediately and rises.

Used air leaves high up on the opposite side. This creates a loop that renews the air without cooling the sauna down.

What happens without it

The air turns heavy and stuffy, and after twenty minutes you get a headache. Not from the heat, but from the lack of fresh air.

Moisture stays in the timber: dark patches, odours and, in time, rot.

Where the vents go

Intake: low down, close to the stove, just above floor level.

Outlet: opposite, under the ceiling or above the top bench.

Both should be adjustable.

How to set them

Close the outlet while heating up. Left open it drains the heat away like an open window.

Open both during your sauna session.

After the session, open everything, including the door, for a few minutes.

How to check it is working

After twenty minutes, the air should be hot but not stuffy.

With the sauna heated, hold a sheet of paper to the outlet. It should be gently drawn towards it.
